Terracota Art
by iniyaal
Terracota, in India, is fast becoming a medium for contemporary art. It is amazing to see wall murals and modern art in terracota. To make it more interesting, these are designed by rural womenfolk and children. These people are not new to Terracota, they come from tribal families doing pottery for generations.
I am talking about Kumbham Terracota… and their amazing terracota designs. From simple tiles to huge wall murals, every piece is handmade and an inspiring work of art.
Coil Tiles…
Motiff tiles…
Murals…
One more interesting mural…
Birdie bath…
Hope you enjoyed Terracota art

How very beautiful and artistic ! I love these terracota tiles, the warm colours, and I imagine what a great patchwork (quilt) it would make if I had the right fabrics ! thank you for sharing your country’s fascinating arts.
As I write here about India’s crafts, it helps me understand and explore them more than ever… one of the many benefits of blogging
I saw the quilts in your blog… they are so very lovely and colourful.

Do you deal with Terracotta? Need some info then.
Hi Ishrath…I love terracota and buy terracota products often. Please let me know what info you need… I would be glad to share any information that might be useful.
Tell me the best/ economical place to buy TCotta – assuming you are from Chennai!
People tell me on road to Pondicherry… but I dont want to go that far.
Thanks.
I was a resident of Chennai till recently. I have moved to Coimbatore now
But can definitely tell about palces in Chennai for terracota products.
Kumbham Terracota products are available in Chennai, at Kalpadruma (in Cathedral Road) and a host of other shops. This link has the addresses http://www.re-cognition.org/crafts/shops.html
The handicraft shops in Mount Road have a good collection. One such good place would be VTI (Victoria Technical Institute) on Mount Road.
Though ECR road (road to Pondy) is far away, Neelankarai (around 15 mts journey from Adayar) has a host of terracota shops. Dakshinachitra (after MGM Dizzee World) has a team of inhouse terracota potters who teach pottery and sell their products there. Hope this helps
Forgot to mention, I have seen small shops on the roadside in Adayar (on LB road) who sell terracota products. As long as you can converse in madras tamil, they will prove to be economical and easiest to locate.
Thanks dear… Will try out soon.
Great to hear that you have moved to Cbe. It will be great to meet you there as I travel to Cbe quite often. Lets exchange emails.
Cheers!
